Bell’s Palsy Risk is Higher in Pregnant Women? This is the Fact

Jakarta

Viral video of a woman who tells her condition affected by Bell’s palsy. The woman named Yulia Zahra, who turned out to be pregnant, experienced paralysis in part of her face.

“When I went to the neurologist, they said it was Bell’s palsy and tends to infect pregnant women a lot because I’m pregnant too,” said the TikTok account owner @juliyuliaa, whose video has recently been watched by millions of people, quoted by detikcom Tuesday (14/6/2022).

He told me his face felt stiff, it was difficult to close one eye and also his right lip which he could barely move.

“It’s hard to close the one eye, the right lip can’t go up, the smile can’t be symmetrical,” he continued.

Quoted from the Facial Paralysis Institute, pregnant women are three times more likely to experience Bell’s palsy than non-pregnant women, with a predominance in the third trimester.

According to the agency’s statement, there are several allegations that arise regarding why Bell’s palsy is more at risk of attacking a pregnant woman, as below:

  • Increased total body water causing swelling and (or) compression of the facial nerve
  • A weakened immune system, especially in the third trimester, which can lead to reactivation of the herpes simplex virus (HSV)
  • Increased blood clotting factors
  • Increased levels of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone

Treatment of Bell’s palsy during pregnancy is still being debated by experts. Some doctors choose not to treat with steroids or antivirals, especially if it occurs in the first trimester.

Others choose to treat Bell’s palsy during pregnancy, especially if it occurs in the third trimester. Steroids have been rated as a “highly effective” treatment for Bell’s palsy during pregnancy, while antivirals are “possibly effective” only when combined with steroids (not to be used alone).

Physical therapy is another option for the treatment of Bell’s palsy during pregnancy, because it is safe and does not require drugs, therapy can also be continued for several months after delivery.
