The Spanish Football Association (RFEF) is investigating an alleged offensive comment by Jude Bellingham towards Mason Greenwood, after La Liga handed the case over to him.

The RFEF Competition Committee is investigating the alleged comment during the La Liga match between Getafe and Real Madrid on February 1.

Videos of the alleged incident, which occurred after a tackle by Bellingham on Greenwood, were widely circulated on social media following the television broadcast of the game.

La Liga subsequently hired a lip reading expert to investigate the incident after confirming a complaint from Getafe.

That report was passed last week to the RFEF Competition Committee, in charge of administering suspensions in Spanish football.

For all incidents, an investigative judge is appointed to gather all relevant information and will then take a decision about the result in a few weeks.

The relevant club will then have a period of 10 working days to appeal the decision.

The Spanish FA regulations state: “Insulting, offending, threatening or provoking, as long as it does not constitute a more serious offense, will be punished by a suspension of one to three games or for a period of up to one month.”

Getafe sources, speaking on condition of anonymity to protect the relationship, insisted after the incident that Greenwood did not want the matter to escalate.

Real Madrid declined to comment when approached by The Athletic.

Greenwood joined Getafe on a season-long loan from Manchester United on the final day of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old became available for transfer after United confirmed on August 21 that they would not reinstate him into the first team, after The Athletic revealed details of plans to reinstate him and then the subsequent reversal.

He had been under United’s internal investigation since February, when the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) discontinued its case against him for attempted rape, assault and coercive control. He denied all alleged offences.
