Real Madrid started Group B of the Champions League with a narrow victory on Wednesday. At home, the Madrilenians managed to beat 1. FC Union Berlin in the final second: 1-0. Real was by far the better team in the Spanish capital, but only managed to convert their dominance into a victory in injury time through a tap-in from Jude Bellingham. Group members Napoli and Braga will be in action later on Wednesday evening.

Carlo Ancelotti changed his team in four places on Tuesday compared to the won match against Real Sociedad (2-1) last Sunday. At the back, Lucas Vázquez replaced the injured Dani Carvajal (muscle injury), while Fran García had to bench for Nacho Fernández. The latter change saw David Alaba shift to the left back position. Midfielders Toni Kroos and Federico Valverde also had to sit on the bench, allowing Luka Modric and Eduardo Camavinga to take their place in the starting eleven. Dutchmen Danilho Doekhi and Sheraldo Becker kicked off at Union. Former FC Dordrecht left back Robin Gosens was also allowed to start by trainer Urs Fischer.

In the initial phase, Real was close to the opening goal with chances for Joselu. Union goalkeeper Ronnow managed to distinguish himself several times with a nice reflex. However, the Germans also showed eagerness and had not only come to Madrid to defend. The most remarkable moment of the first half was a tackle by Aurélien Tchouaméni, who wanted to recover an incorrect pass from Camavinga. The French controller did this rudely, by sliding into Alex Kral with both legs. The referee only punished the tackle with a yellow card, which allowed Real to continue with eleven men.

After the break, the Royal team came out of the dressing room a lot stronger. However, Ronnow personally managed to keep Union on its feet with goal attempts by Rodrygo, Camavinga and Joselu. The latter saw his header hit the post after a great save from the Danish closing post. In the final phase, Ancelotti’s team emphatically looked for the winning goal. Bellingham eventually managed to make it at the last minute by scoring the liberating 1-0 after a messy situation, leaving Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in ecstasy.
