Bella Hadid Opens Up About 15-Year Battle with Lyme Disease

The famous American supermodel, Bella Hadid, spoke at length about the chronic illness she has been suffering from for 15 years, explaining through the Instagram application the reasons for her absence from high fashion shows in the recent period, and hinting at the possibility of resuming her activity.

In a letter accompanied by extracts from her medical file and photos of her in the hospital, Hadid recalled her “15 years of invisible suffering” due to Lyme disease and long treatments, saying she was “finally in good health”.

The 26-year-old star, who is one of the most famous models of her generation along with her sister Gigi Hadid, wrote: “I will return when I feel ready for it.”

Hadid, who is of Palestinian origin, did not participate in the latest major fashion events, including the “Met Gala” party and Paris Fashion Week, which sparked speculation among some about the possibility of her permanent withdrawal from the catwalks.

The model, whose real name is Isabella Hadid, has previously talked about the difficulty of pursuing her career due to her illness.

She said Sunday: “Feeling so sad and sick when I have all this luck and privilege and opportunity and love around me, it can seem very overwhelming.”

She added, “All of this has burdened me, which I can’t really explain,” but reassured her followers that she was “fine and nothing to worry about.”

Her mother and brother, who are also models, suffer from the same disease.

According to a large study conducted in 2022, more than 14 percent of the world’s population is infected with Lyme disease caused by a type of bacteria, which is transmitted through tick bites.

Lyme disease is rarely fatal, but people who are bitten by infected ticks often develop a rash and flu-like symptoms, including muscle and joint pain, headache, nausea and vomiting.
