Two and a half years after the launch of newscasts on its general-interest channel Noovo, Bell Media has decided to disconnect its two weekend newscasts this fall.
In announcing its programming for the season on Monday, the information service Noovo Info made no mention of these information meetings normally broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Bell Media spokesperson Patrick Tremblay confirmed to Le Devoir that the program Le fil week-end would simply not return to the air. The last issue dates back to April 23. What was supposed to be a temporary break during the summer finally turns out to be a permanent stop.
“With this adjustment to the content production strategy, Noovo Info is putting its energies and resources at the service of producing documentaries that tackle issues that have a significant impact on society,” said Patrick Tremblay in an email.
Host Meeker Guerrier, who has been at the helm of the show since its debut in March 2021, however, remains at Noovo Info. He will intervene more in the weekday bulletins – which are maintained – as well as during the daily program Les Débatteurs. He will also occasionally replace Michel Bherer at the animation of the 10 p.m. bulletins.
Name change
Noovo has also announced a few changes to come, starting with the new name of its news bulletins, which will be called Noovo Info as of August 28, and no longer Noovo Le fil. A way to “gather under the same identity all the offer proposed by the French-speaking information service of Bell Media”, specified Jean-Philippe Pineault, director general of information, by means of press release Monday.
Marie-Christine Bergeron will continue to host the 5 p.m. newscast (renamed Noovo Info 17), and Michel Bherer, the 10 p.m. newscast (renamed Noovo Info 22). Mr. Bherer will however be replaced on Friday evenings by Sabrina Rivet. Another addition to the team of hosts: journalist Jean-Simon Bui will now be at the helm of regional news programs in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Mauricie and Estrie during the week. This will allow Lisa-Marie Blais to devote herself to the animation of the Quebec newsletter.
In addition, Maxime Landry becomes senior news manager at Noovo Info, after spending 27 years at TVA, which he left last March. He thus takes over from Ariane Lafrenière, who left the channel during the last season.
As for Noémi Mercier, who hosted Le fil 17 during the first season, she will continue to devote herself to the production of documentaries.
