The news that Roger Federer will have a new knee operation left everyone speechless. Many predicted he would skip the US Open, but no one could have guessed that the Swiss phenomenon would go under the knife for the third time in the past year and a half.
The former world number 1 has sent a message of hope to his fans but the chances of seeing him competitive again on the tour are slim now. The 20-time Grand Slam winner also had to retire from the Tokyo Olympics, which, alongside Wimbledon, were his main goal of the season.
The Swiss champion is said to be playing mixed doubles with his compatriot Belinda Bencic, author of a glamorous journey in women’s singles. The current number 11 in the WTA rankings won the gold medal at the end of a memorable week, which will give her a special place in Swiss tennis history.
Bencic thanks Roger Federer again
Bencic and Federer had participated in the Hopman Cup from 2017 to 2019 and won the trophy in two consecutive editions (2018 and 2019) after defeating the Germany of Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber.
During a press conference in Cincinnati, Bencic was asked to reveal which congratulatory message she was most pleased with after her triumph in Japan. She said, “I think all the compliments I’ve got from my family and friends have been exciting.
I heard the most important people in my life right after the final. I was also very happy when I read the news from Roger Federer, he was overjoyed with my victory in Tokyo.
He was very sweet, it seemed like he was with me. “Belinda will be one of the favorites at the next US Open. Federer, for his part, will not be able to participate in the last slam of the season, in which he prevailed five times (his last success is but from 2008).
The maestro has not particularly shined in New York in recent editions, with the exception of the final, which was reached in 2015 (lost to Novak Djokovic).
