Belinda Bencic easily reached the quarterfinals at the WTA 500 tournament in Washington. The eastern Swiss prevailed in the second round against American Lauren Davis 6:1, 6:4.
Bencic, who is contesting her first tournament since Wimbledon, did not struggle in her second match in the American capital. She needed 78 minutes to beat Davis, who is 1.57 meters tall and number 54 in the ranking. In the second set, Bencic made the break to make it 4:3. In the first round, the Olympic champion benefited from her opponent Anastasia Potapova’s forfait.
Another American awaits Bencic in her fifth quarterfinal this year, the first since April. Coco Gauff (WTA 4), seeded number 3, competes in an unequal duel, at least according to the ranking, with Hailey Baptiste (WTA 204), two years older than her, who eliminated the former world number one Karolina Pliskova in the first round in her hometown.
