Believing in the miracle of Christmas – for every lonely old man and child in care of the district

Christmas is when you want to share a smile, a warm word and a cozy moment with those who need it the most. To share kindness – this is the goal set by the leaders of the Alytus district municipality – mayor Rasa Vitkauskienė, vice-mayor Aurimas Truncė, who, together with the team and representatives of the ward, visited the lonely old people of the district, children under care. Sensitive and real – stories that broke the heart to the core, painful experiences, living conditions that were scorned by fate – all this was eye-watering, but the Christmas miracle traveled from door to door.

The 72-year-old grandmother, who raised her two great-grandchildren from infancy, did everything in her power to make their future a little easier – she bought them a homestead near her home. Another grandmother takes care of two grandchildren with severe disabilities and does not complain about anything, although the living conditions in her own house are really not pampering. And there are many such stories that were heard by the district leaders who visited the elderly and children under care.

“In a few days, we visited half a dozen children in foster care and more than 500 elderly people living alone or in foster homes. The stories I heard are worthy of a movie. How much strength, sacrifice and hope. I am grateful to the guardians who open the doors and hearts of their homes to disadvantaged children. I am grateful to the social workers and all the caring residents of the Alytus district who take care of the weaker ones. On the occasion of the upcoming holidays, I would like to wish everyone not to lose that sincere faith, to share warmth, attention and kindness. So that no one feels alone and lonely. And not only during the holidays”, says R. Vitkauskienė, mayor of the Alytus district municipality.

A. Truncė, the vice mayor of the Alytus district municipality, did not spare sincere words to every single elderly person who was visited and lives in a care home. Shaking hands with the elderly residents, he wished them strength, health and bright days.

“We want the spirit of the coming Christmas to touch every resident of the district. Lonely old people or foster children touched by the trials of fate – everyone needs comfort, attention, and a kind word. It strengthens, inspires hope, brings knowing that you are needed and awakens the holiday spirit. Visiting those who no longer have to take care of them, just to be around loved ones who can, is the least we can all do. After such visits, a very good feeling remains in the heart. Eyes full of gratitude and a bright smile on our lips are a sign that we have reached our tiny goal,” says Vice Mayor A. Truncė.

A total of 543 lonely old people were visited in the Alytus district. Of them, 443 are at home, 100 are in Miroslavas, Pivašiūnai, Rumboni care and group living homes. To make the table of the upcoming holidays more generous, delicious gifts were distributed to each of them.

Every child under care in the Alytus district was also visited. There are currently 57 in their district. In order to bring them as much joy as possible during the upcoming holidays, the waiting basket included not only sweet gifts, but also an invitation to the cinema.
