Prices in Belgium were 5.6 percent higher in April than twelve months previously. That is a lower inflation rate than in February and March. However, food prices continue to rise sharply in our southern neighbours.
Inflation was still at 6.7 and 6.6 percent in March and February. But the figure this month fell to its lowest level since November 2021. In October last year, inflation peaked at 12.3 percent. The fall in energy prices in particular has led to lower inflation.
But food prices are still rising fast. According to statistics bureau Statbel, food and drinks were more than 16.6 percent more expensive in April than one year previously. For example, dairy products and oil and fats will cost more than a quarter more than in April 2022.
On 2 May, Statistics Netherlands will announce the Dutch inflation figure for April. In March the percentage was 4.4 percent. Then food was no less than 18 percent more expensive than one year previously.
