Belgium Traffic Jams to Cost More Than 5 Billion Euros in 2023, Increase of 4% from Previous Year

The loss of time, extra fuel consumption and additional emissions from traffic jams in Belgium will cost more than 5 billion euros in 2023. That is an increase of 4 percent compared to 2022. This is evident from figures from the Belgian Mobility Dashboard.

October and November were the months with the highest costs, 552 million and 513 million euros respectively. Costs were lowest in the summer month of July (271 million euros). Passenger cars accounted for 42 percent of the costs. Light and heavy trucks represented 23 and 35 percent respectively.

Figures from the Flemish Traffic Center show that there have never been more traffic jams than in 2023. The traffic jams were exceptionally heavy, especially in November, said Peter Bruyninckx of the Traffic Center on X (formerly Twitter). A record amount of traffic jams was also recorded for the months of March, April, May and July.

The Federation of Belgian Enterprises (VBO) and sector federation Febiac calculate how much the traffic jams cost every month. The figures are always published via the Belgian Mobility Dashboard.
