The idea is not new. Belgium will build Princess Elisabeth Island in the North Sea, the first artificial energy island in the world. It will bundle the electricity generated by the new wind turbines in the Princess Elisabeth zone – which will be the second wind turbine zone off our coast – and at the same time it will become a central connection point for future new interconnectors – which are submarine high-voltage lines – starting with Great Britain and Denmark.
The government of Denmark itself is also thinking about an energy island. But those plans are being reconsidered due to the high costs. According to CIP, producing green hydrogen offshore and then bringing it onshore via pipelines is cheaper than bringing electricity onshore via cables.
