Belgium Reports Avian Flu Outbreak

TEMPO.CO, JakartaBelgium reports a new outbreak of highly contagious avian influenza (H5N1) on a farm in Meulebeke, West Flanders Province. The outbreak comes at a time when Belgian authorities hope to regain the disease-free status.

As reported Reuters Thursday, March 31, 2022, Europe detected a number of new outbreaks of bird flu in recent weeks, which started in France. European veterinary services have struggled to contain the highly contagious virus.

The Belgian outbreak discovered in Tielt, not far from France, will be the first this year, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said on Wednesday.

Bird flu caused the death of 193 birds and the culling of nearly 19,000 animals, citing information from Belgian authorities. The measures are in accordance with European law and Belgium has taken steps to contain the spread of the virus, such as establishing a protection zone with a three-kilometer radius and a surveillance zone with a 10-kilometer radius.

Applications for bird flu -free status are highly contagious Belgium filed on March 17 and is currently under review by the OIE, Belgian food chain regulatory agency FASFC said on its website.
