The Belgian ambassador to South Korea must return urgently, now that his wife has been discredited for the second time in a short time. This was decided by Minister Wilmès of Foreign Affairs.
The wife, Xiang Xueqiu, got into a fight in Seoul on Monday with a street sweeper who allegedly touched her with a broom. Things got heated and the street sweeper allegedly pushed the woman to the ground.
Xiang Xueqiu is said to have punched the street sweeper in the face. According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, neither of them wanted to press charges.
Ambassador Peter Lescouhier would return to Belgium at the end of this month. That was also earlier than planned, following a blow that his wife in April handed out to a saleswoman in a clothing store.
120 years of diplomatic relations
“The current situation no longer allows him to carry out his duties in a serene manner,” the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs read at the time. Ambassador Lescouhier apologized for his wife’s behavior.
Now he can pack his bags even earlier. Minister Wilmès points in a statement to the “responsibility of an ambassador in the host country”. South Korea and Belgium are celebrating 120 years of diplomatic relations this year.
