Belgium Raises Minimum Internet Speed from 1 to 30 Mbps: Mijntelco.be

MijntelcoMinister of Telecom Petra De Sutter is raising the legally required minimum internet speed from 1 to 30 megabits per second (Mbps). “About 40,000 households in our country today have to make do with very slow internet. That will change,” says De Sutter. Her Royal Decree will be approved later today by the federal council of ministers, as you know Mijntelco.be.

Limited possibilities

The minister in question knows all too well that you cannot do much with 1 Mbps internet speed. “You can read emails, surf to very simple sites or, in the best case scenario, watch a movie with probably few pixels. You feel it: that is no longer of this time. Nevertheless, 38,000 households fall back on an internet speed of between 1 and 30 Mbps.”

So that will change. Telecom operators are gradually being obliged to increase their internet speed to 10 Mbps next year and 30 Mbps in 2027. In concrete terms, this means that people no longer have to wait minutes for a video to load, and that they can arrange their banking affairs online and at the same time read the appendix of to open an email. De Sutter: “Even if it is not yet ideal, with an internet speed up to 30 times faster than now, everyone can make better use of the internet.”

European leader

“Besides Malta, Belgium will be the only country in Europe that guarantees everyone that there is a minimum internet speed of 30 Mbps,” she adds. She underlines that Belgium is thus pioneering within Europe.

Finally, De Sutter points out that she wants to get rid of the so-called white zones: “These are places in our country where people have to make do with strongly slowed internet.” She has allocated money for this purpose, which the telecom operators in our country can use to upgrade the networks to gigabit speeds.
