Foreign Students Flock to Belgian Universities and Colleges

Belgium’s universities and colleges have become a popular destination for foreign students, with 9,011 students receiving student visas last year. According to data provided by the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Theo Francken, Cameroonians are the largest group in terms of demand, but it is the Chinese who have the highest acceptance rate.

The diversity of students and researchers from all continents enriches Belgium’s higher education institutions. However, the figure of 9,011 only represents a portion of the total number of foreign students, as European nationals do not require a visa to study in Belgium. Secretary of State Francken emphasizes the importance of intellectual cross-pollination and the exchange of ideas and research between foreign and local students.

Despite the high number of student visas granted, there are also many applications that are refused each year. In 2017, there were 2,074 rejections. Francken notes that students from developing countries sometimes view student visas as an opportunity for permanent emigration, leading to stricter scrutiny of applications.

The top five countries with the highest number of student visa applications are Cameroon (1,949), China (901), the United States (584), Turkey (529), and Morocco (490). However, when it comes to positive decisions, China takes the lead with 882 approvals, followed by Cameroon with 826, the United States with 571, Turkey with 462, and India with 298.

Secretary of State Francken highlights the issue of Cameroonian students, as less than half of their applications receive a positive response. In comparison, although fewer Chinese students applied (901), a higher percentage (882) were granted visas. Francken attributes this discrepancy to the prevalence of false diplomas and documents submitted by Cameroonian applicants, indicating widespread fraud and corruption.

To address this problem, Francken visited Cameroon and inaugurated a “Campus Belgium” to ensure thorough verification of documents, language proficiency, skills, and intentions of Cameroonian students enrolling in Belgian higher education institutions. The institute works closely with the immigration office to ensure the integrity of the student visa process.

Belgium remains committed to welcoming foreign students and researchers, but also aims to maintain the integrity of its visa system and prevent abuse. The influx of international students contributes to the cultural diversity and academic excellence of Belgian universities and colleges.

What initiatives are being implemented in Belgian universities and colleges to improve the integration process for foreign students?

Zes the need to improve the integration process for foreign students in order to further encourage their enrollment in Belgian universities and colleges.

The surge in foreign students can be attributed to Belgium’s reputation for high-quality education and its strategic location in the heart of Europe. The country’s universities offer a wide range of courses taught in English, appealing to international students who are seeking to enhance their educational experience and gain a global perspective.

The large number of Cameroonians seeking student visas reflects Belgium’s historical ties with the African nation. Many Cameroonian students are attracted to Belgian universities due to the availability of scholarships and grants, as well as the opportunity to study in a French-speaking country.

On the other hand, the high acceptance rate for Chinese students highlights Belgium’s growing popularity among Chinese students seeking international education. The country’s commitment to providing quality education, combined with its welcoming environment, has made it an attractive destination for Chinese students looking to broaden their horizons.

Despite the positive influx of foreign students, there are challenges that need to be addressed. Secretary of State Francken stresses the importance of integrating foreign students into Belgian society, both academically and socially. This includes providing language support, cultural orientation programs, and assistance in finding accommodation.

Efforts are underway to improve the integration process, including the creation of mentorship programs and support services for international students. Additionally, universities are working towards providing more international exchange programs and internships to foster cross-cultural understanding.

Belgium’s universities and colleges are optimistic about the future, recognizing the potential that foreign students bring in terms of diversity, cultural exchange, and economic growth. With continued efforts to enhance integration and support services, Belgium aims to remain a top choice for international students seeking a quality education in the heart of Europe.
