Belgium Implements New Internet Speed Requirement of 30Mbit/s, Following in Malta’s Footsteps

From 2027, Belgian telecom companies must offer internet subscriptions with at least 30Mbit/s speeds. The legally required minimum speed is currently 1Mbit/s. Malta is the only other EU country that requires a minimum speed of 30Mbit/s.

Telecom Minister Petra De Sutter says that a 1Mbit/s connection is ‘out of date’ and therefore wants to increase that speed. Next year, telecom companies must offer at least 10Mbit/s, from 2027 that must be 30Mbit/s. “Even if it is not yet ideal, with an internet speed of up to thirty times faster, everyone can make optimal use of the internet,” says the minister. Her Royal Decree requiring this speed will be approved by the federal council of ministers on Friday, according to the minister.

At the moment there are 38,000 Belgian households that do not have access to internet speeds of 30Mbit/s or higher and therefore benefit from this decision. This mainly concerns Walloon households, with 31,000 households below 30Mbit/s. Incidentally, providers are investing in these areas and there are several support programs to offer higher speeds here, says the regulator BIPT.
