Belgium Healthcare Faces Pressure as Flu Cases Rise: Switching to Code Orange

The number of cases of flu and other respiratory infections is once again increasing the pressure on healthcare in Belgium and because the peak of the flu season is still expected to come, it was decided from above to switch to code orange. A general face mask obligation is not (yet) in place, but hospitals are on their guard.

The AZ Sint-Elisabeth Zottegem also reports in a ‘news item’ that anyone who comes to the hospital as a visitor or for a doctor’s consultation is strongly advised to wear a face mask (mandatory for hospital employees with patient contact). Especially in case of a cold or other flu symptoms – even if they are mild – it is advisable to use a mouth mask. It is also advised to reschedule a doctor’s appointment or postpone a visit if possible.
