Less precipitation fell than predicted in parts of Belgium last night, such as in the hard-hit province of West Flanders. The water level has dropped somewhat here and there, but the risk of flooding remains high in many places.
The problems are greatest in the so-called Westhoek. That is the area of West Flanders that borders France. The places Houthulst, Lo-Reninge and Diksmuide can no longer process extra rainwater, writes The last news.
A dike near Diksmuide overflowed in some places on Thursday. As a result, fifteen homes had to be evacuated. At two other locations in the region, the water level has actually dropped slightly. The same applies to the water in the Heulebeek.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Flemish Minister of the Interior Gwendolyn Rutten visited the Westhoek on Thursday afternoon. Belgian King Philippe will visit the area on Friday.
There are currently local showers in Belgium. It will only clear during the course of the day, reports the weather service KMI.
