Belgium has expelled dozens of Russians from the country in recent months. According to Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, these are “so-called Russian diplomats” who “clearly worked as spies” for the Kremlin, Belgian media report.
De Croo announced the deportations in conversation with RTL info when he was asked about Russian attempts to destabilize the West. According to him, the Russian government also regularly carries out organized disinformation campaigns in Belgium. Belgian websites are also experiencing cyber attacks more often since the government took a stand against Russia.
Belgium finances its support to Ukraine by taxing Russian assets in Belgium. The Belgian government has frozen hundreds of billions of euros in assets. The tax revenue on those assets is used to support Ukraine in the war against Russia. The Belgian taxpayer would not have to finance anything.
It is not the first time that the Belgians have expelled Russian diplomats from the country on suspicion of espionage. Shortly after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, several European countries, including Belgium and the Netherlands, reported expelling Russian diplomats with a secret agenda.
