Belgium: Duvel beer fell victim to… cyberattack – 4 factories down – 2024-03-09 15:50:10

The Belgian brewery that produces Duvel beer fell victim to a ransomware cyberattack, forcing it to temporarily close all five of its production units. According to the company’s announcement, out of the five units, only one was able to be put back into operation.

As the company said: “The built-in management systems and alarms in the IT system worked well, so our IT department was immediately notified of the attack. The servers were immediately taken out of service, which also led to the interruption of production at the four Belgian production facilities and the Kansas City production facility.”

Duvel, which also produces beers such as Chouffe, Vedett and Liefmans, was founded in 1871 and had revenues of €583m (£497m) in 2022, with production then reaching around 230m liters of beer.

Duvel said that only the factory, in Puurs-Sint-Amands in Belgium, has now resumed operations and it is not yet known whether the supply of its products will be affected by this incident.

It is noted that a ransomware attack means that the hackers who carry it out threaten to lock or leak files unless they are paid.
