The House of Representatives wants the cabinet to investigate whether a “personalized license plate” can be introduced. With such a license plate, someone can pay for a license plate with letters and numbers of their choice. PVV MP Heutink pointed out in a debate that there are more countries with such a system, including Belgium.
Motorists then have a number plate with, for example, their own name on it. Heutink spoke of “a hip phenomenon and a bit of the gadget of our time”.
Harbers: there are snags
He also asked outgoing Minister Harbers on behalf of VVD, NSC and BBB to have the results of a study ready before the summer. The four parties together have a majority in the Chamber. According to them, the Ministry of Infrastructure may be able to make money with personalized license plates. And that could be used to alleviate the burden on motorists in the long term.
Harbers promised in the debate that he will conduct the investigation, although he believes there are drawbacks to these types of license plates. “But we’ll all see about that.”
