“Belgium Can’t Revoke Anti-Semitic License Plate HH-88: Proposed Law Change by MP Michael Freilich”

At the end of February, Brussels was startled by a car with a number plate referring to Adolf Hitler. However, the anti-Semitic license plate cannot be revoked by the government.

The car was spotted with license plate HH-88. That is a reference to ‘Heil Hitler’ twice, because the letter h is the eighth in the alphabet. It is a code that is popular in right-wing extremist and neo-Nazi circles.

Anyone who pays 1000 euros for a personalized number plate in Belgium must obtain approval from the Belgian RDW – the Vehicle Registration Service. “Like you, I was shocked by this license plate,” Belgian Minister Gilkinet (Mobility) responds in writing to questions. When asked the minister why the government cannot withdraw number plates if they are already in circulation, Gilkinet replied: ‘The Royal Decree does not allow a number plate to be canceled ex officio just because of the inscription.’

Racism and anti-Semitism

Belgian Member of Parliament Michael Freilich wants to change that. “We have to change the law so that the administration has the option to withdraw number plates. With this we send a clear signal that racism and anti-Semitism will never be tolerated,” he told the Belgian newspaper. HLN.

In the Netherlands, all vowels have been removed from license plate combinations to avoid unwanted words. A number of license plate combinations are also prohibited. In the Netherlands, these are the letter combinations GVD, KKK, NSB, PKK, PSV, TBS, SS and SD.
