Our country has previously purchased medicines that can help against corona. But with the purchase of Molnupiravir, a drug that has been developed against corona is being used for the first time.
A ‘game changer’, experts speak of Merck’s corona pill Molnupiravir. According to preliminary studies, the chance of hospitalization is reduced by 30 percent in adults with an increased risk of covid. Merck’s drug therefore also received preliminary approval from the European Medicines Agency. Many countries in Europe have placed an order in the meantime, and so has our country. Although it will remain with a rather limited number for the time being.
“We have ordered Molnupiravir and it will initially be used in a clinical study,” confirms Wendy Lee, spokesperson for FPS Public Health. When the medication could be widespread is still unclear. “We are really still at the very beginning. There are still many steps to be taken.”
The new task force ‘Covid Therapeutics’ advised the government to purchase 10,000 pills. A limited volume because ‘there is uncertainty about the results and there are many uncertainties about the proper use of Lagevrio (the brand name of the drug, ed.)’.
