Dozens of Belgians were stranded at the French border this Saturday.

VInterior Minister Pieter De Crem announced on Friday May 29 that Belgium was reopening its borders to neighboring countries. Belgians are now allowed to take the road to visit family (continuing to apply the four-person rule) or to go shopping in five countries: France, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Great Britain.

But this Saturday morning, several Belgians were turned back by the French police. Simple communication error according to Philippe Goffin, who explained that as the order is recent, it will take a few hours to inform the French police.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been contacted by our colleagues from RTL. According to a spokesperson, the French borders are closed until June 15. Finally, no visit or shopping in France for another two weeks, and a fine of 135 euros if a Belgian is checked on French territory.

An exemption is however provided for cross-border workers and people who visit a sick relative. But these people will have to provide a certificate.
