The number of residents of the northern region who have found work across Quiévrain has increased by 30% in ten years. Residents of Lille, Roubaix and Tourcoing are particularly numerous to take advantage of this possibility.
With a unemployment rate of 9% in the second quarter of 2024, compared to 7.1% nationally, Hauts‐de‐France comes first among the metropolitan regions hit by the lack of jobs. Faced with this situation, more and more residents seem to be looking for a solution on the other side of the border, according to an INSEE study made public on November 28.
In 2021, in fact, the number of people residing in Hauts‐de‐France and working in Belgium increased by 30% to around 36,000. This movement is particularly evident in Roubaix‐Tourcoing (+2,200 compared to 2010). ), in Valenciennes (+ 1,800), in Lille (+ 1,700) or even in Maubeuge (+ 1,200). These four cities are also at the top of the list of “employment zones” with the most inhabitants working in the neighboring kingdom. They concentrate 80% of all cross-border workers in the region employed in Belgium.
