Herman Brusselmans, Maxime Meiland and Sergio Vyent continued the campaign month of Stoptober. The three say they don’t want to touch a cigarette anymore after this month.

The Belgian writer Brusselmans took part in the action because of his child. “It wasn’t easy to quit smoking after 56 years, but this was the moment. I had a hard time, but through willpower I made it. I want my eight-month-old son, Roman, to grow up in a smoke-free environment .”

Meiland says that the first days were especially difficult. “But I didn’t give in to the voice in my head. I also felt support from other people who quit smoking.”

Vyent, known for First Dates, says he already feels “more vital”. “Not that I was short of breath, but I just feel fitter. I also notice that my taste has improved. My intention is to keep it up from here, I hope that the other quitters will also succeed.”

Stoptober, an initiative of various organizations, was organized for the tenth time this year. Since 2014, 500,000 people have already participated. They are challenged not to smoke for 28 days.

People who don’t smoke for at least four weeks are five times more likely to quit permanently, because they have then gone through the period with the most severe withdrawal symptoms.
