A woman from Brakel in Belgium was found dead in front of her home on Sunday evening after being stabbed by her husband. Moments later, his lifeless body was also found at a watchtower a few miles away. A neighbor who knows the couple well reacts shocked: “I can’t imagine that they would hurt each other.”
The victim was found in Keiweg, just in front of the house where she lived with her husband. The couple allegedly got into an argument in the house, in which the man stabbed the woman in the chest with a knife. He tried to flee outside but collapsed a few meters from the front door. There was no help for her anymore.
The man, a self-employed painter, then drove to a nearby watchtower to kill himself. “The woman was found in the house and her husband at the watchtower in Brakel,” confirms Mayor of Brakel Stefaan Devleeschouwer.
“The true circumstances are still being investigated, but the municipality is in shock. I knew the couple and they were very hard workers. We sympathize with the family and the next of kin.” A neighbor who knew the couple very well also cannot believe it: “They seemed like a model couple… I really can’t imagine that they would hurt each other.”
The man was a self-employed painter and the couple lived next door to the woman’s parents. They leave behind two daughters. The woman’s parental home, a few houses away, was also thoroughly searched by the police. The residents were not home when the stabbing happened.
