The leader of the UAE Team Emirates team was seven seconds behind the winner, but at the start he gained valuable seconds on his biggest rivals in the overall standings. Compatriot Primož Roglič lost nine seconds to him in eighth place, last year’s second man Jonas Vingegaard was one less in seventh place.

“It’s unbelievable, I can’t understand it at all. The best of the best are riding here and I finished first,” the 31-year-old Lampaert rejoiced at the unexpected triumph, during which he won, among other things, the scalp of the fourth world time trial champion Filippo Ganna from Italy.

On Saturday, the second 202 km long stage awaits the peloton, in which there are no Czech riders for the first time since 2018. Cyclists will stay in Denmark until Sunday, in total they will ride through four countries this year. In addition to Denmark and France, the Tour will also visit Belgium and Switzerland. The peloton faces more than 3,300 kilometers before the riders reach the finish line in Paris on July 24.
