Belgian Tennis Players Suspended for Match-Fixing: ITIA Report

This Saturday the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) reported the suspension of seven Belgian tennis players. Those who are involved in a network of match-fixing in their country. The sanctions are related to a recent criminal case investigation which concluded with the five-year prison sentence of the union’s leader, Grigor Sargsyan. Thanks to the collaboration between ITIA and the Belgian authorities. The seven tennis players who were suspended are: Arnaud Graisse, Arthur de Greef, Julien Dubail, Romain Barbosa, Maxime Authom, Omar Salman and Alec Witmeur, who were convicted by the criminal court and subsequently received sanctions by the ITIA. Among those suspended, the most notable is the Belgian Arthur de Greef, who reached 113th place in the ATP ranking in 2017. The Belgian received three years and nine months of punishment, in addition to a fine of $45,000 dollars. Therefore, he will not be able to play again until February 2025. In general, suspensions range from two to four years. Witmeur, De Greef and Barbossa, They were the first to be suspended and formally accused in the criminal proceedings in Belgium, as they are active players at that time. Witmeur admitted six TACP violations, while Greef and Barbosa admitted another nine violations. While the suspension period lasts, players will have any activity related to tennis. From playing, training or attending any tennis event authorized or sanctioned by ITIA members: ATP, ITF, WTA, Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open, or any National Association.
