Belgian telecom company Citymesh takes over the Dutch Sigfox iot network – IT Pro – News

The Belgian telecom company Citymesh has taken over the Dutch Sigfox network from VolkerWessels Telecom. A Sigfox network is a relatively cheap mobile IoT network for providing internet access to water meters, vehicles and packages, for example.

The two companies are not disclosing an acquisition amount, Citymesh does indicate that VolkerWessels Telecom will continue to maintain and expand the network. Citymesh has taken over a Sigfox network in Belgium since last year and has acquired parts of the 5G spectrum. The provider is mainly active in the business market, although the company also wants to offer services to consumers with that 5G network.

With the acquisition, Citymesh says it wants to get to know the Dutch telecom market, where it also wants to offer ‘mobile private networks and other network services’ in addition to Sigfox networks. Sigfox is a network technology with a very low throughput of up to 600bit/s, which is intended for internet-of-things applications. Citymesh uses the Belgian Sigfox network, for example, to connect 300,000 water meters of water supply company Waterlink, to track containers or to trace blood transports.
