“I went around the world thanks to stair running.” From Brazil to Vietnam via Singapore, Belgian Omar Bekkali, resident in Luxembourg since 2020, tackles the biggest towers in the world during races where he climbs hundreds of steps.
Wednesday evening, he participated for the 10th time in the most prestigious of them, at the Empire State Building, in New York, where he completed the 1,576 steps and 86 floors of one of the tallest towers. famous in the world in 12’13”. Impeccable lifestyle
“At the beginning, I did 1,500 m on the track or 10 km races and then in 2009 I saw a report on this event in New York,” Omar Bekkali rewinds. This intrigued me and I signed up. At the time, I started from the third starting row and managed to finish 4th. After that, I was contacted to do other races.
A bus driver for Émile Weber for five months, the Belgian has an impeccable lifestyle and trains a lot to remain among the best in his discipline at 45. Two Sundays a month, he goes to Brussels to have training sessions at the Tour du Midi, the tallest building in Belgium. But he would like to find a place to train in Luxembourg. “I spotted a 20-story tower in Kirchberg, but I have to obtain authorization,” explains the athlete. “That would allow me to train on stairs two or three times a week.”
Enough to prepare in optimal conditions before the first World Championships in the discipline which will take place on November 19 in Osaka, Japan.
