The Belgian radio presenter who was arrested for possessing and distributing child pornography remains in custody. Sven Pichal was initially allowed to wait for the examination at home with an ankle bracelet, but the Public Prosecution Service successfully objected to this.
44-year-old Pichal, a well-known voice on the radio at the Flemish broadcaster VRT, was arrested three weeks ago. The Public Prosecution Service suspects him and two co-suspects of “very serious offences”.
The council chamber in Antwerp decided on Tuesday to keep Pichal in jail during the investigation, the Public Prosecution Service said. This should prevent him from making mistakes again or from damaging the investigation, for example by consulting with other parties involved. According to his lawyers, Pichal no longer asked to be released provisionally.
A court psychiatrist will investigate the condition of the suspects and, for example, whether they are accountable. Pichal’s lawyers have already announced that he wants to undergo treatment.
