The Belgian Prince Laurent is being sued by the investment company of the Libyan government. King Philippe’s 59-year-old brother is said to have exerted unjustified pressure on society to recover his investment of millions.
According to HLN in The morning Laurent signed a contract with the government of Libya for a reforestation project. In 2010, this contract was unilaterally terminated by the government.
Laurent is said to have already invested 50 million euros in the project and demanded his money back. For this he turned to the Libyan investment company LIA. But according to LIA’s lawyer, the investment company has nothing to do with it and Laurent must be elsewhere to resolve the financial conflict.
In addition, Laurent would have exerted “an unacceptable pressure” on society. For example, he would have said that he could influence a case against the CEO of LIA. The prince is charged with fraud, extortion and unlawful influence. Laurent’s lawyer calls the lawsuit “pathetic”.
