A woman who brutally murdered her five children and was sentenced to 16 years in prison ended her life by euthanasia. Genevieve Lhermitt, a Belgian citizen, was euthanized while serving her sentence. (Belgian mother who killed her 5 children euthanised)
That incident which shook the entire country was on February 28, 2007. Genevieve, her husband Bouchaib Mokhadem and their five children lived in a house in Nivelles, Belgium. The family had no other issue. This is when Bouchaib leaves home alone to visit his parents in Morocco. His wife and children were not taken.
Genevieve was then left alone at home with her children for several days and fell into deep despair. Genevieve was troubled by the thought that if her husband did not return, she and her five children would be left alone. With that, Jeni came to a severe mental crisis.
One day Genevieve decided to end her life. The plan was to kill her children and take her own life. Genevieve first stole two knives from the supermarket. When Genevieve got home, she locked all the front doors and began planning the murder. After that, each child was killed by slitting their throats. After he tried to commit suicide but failed, he informed the emergency department. Yasmin (14), Nora (12), Miriam (10), Mina (seven) and Mehdi (3) were killed.
In 2008, the court sentenced Genevieve to life imprisonment. But in 2019, Genevieve, who had already gone into severe mental disorder, was transferred to a mental health center. Genevieve chose to be euthanized exactly sixteen years after the brutal murder. Genevieve’s lawyer, Nicholas Cohen, released the report that Genevieve had accepted euthanasia. Meanwhile, Jeni legally divorced her husband.

Belgian media reported that Lhermitt died at the Leonard de Vinci hospital in Montigny-le-Tille. In 2021, Jeni tried to commit suicide. Meanwhile, 2,966 people died by euthanasia in Belgium last year. There was a 10 percent increase compared to 2021.
