Petra De Sutter, the Belgian Minister of Telecommunications, wants to use a second telecom provider in addition to Proximus to forward emergency calls to the emergency services. This requires an amendment to the telecom law.
The availability of a second telecom provider must ensure that emergency numbers are always reachable. Recently, the emergency numbers were inaccessible several times due to disruptions at Proximus. There are no exact figures for the disruptions, according to De Sutter, but ‘it happens a few times a year’ writes VRT NWS.
This not only concerns the accessibility of the emergency numbers 101 and 112, but also, for example, that of the suicide line and the number of the European Center for Missing Children. The scheme is expected to come into effect later this year, provided parliament approves the measure. It is not yet known which telecom provider will be used in addition to Proximus.
