At noon, the Debt Agency announced that the counter now stands at 22.3 billion euros. “The final amount raised will be known on Monday,” said Minister Van Peteghem.
“This is a signal from small savers to the banks,” he told RTBF last night. “If savings rates still don’t move, we will use all the resources we have available” to push the banks to better compensate savers.
The government still has to provide the legal framework for the government bond. And some experts question the legality of the (lower) percentage of withholding tax (15 percent) that will apply to the government bond. Although the cabinet of Minister Van Peteghem has already heard that this will be all right.
