Belgian goalkeeper dies while parrying a penalty

25-year-old goalkeeper of the amateur team from West Flanders “Winkel Sport B” Arne Espil died during a match with “Vestrosebek”.

Espil, in the 60th minute, with the score 2:1 in favor of his team, repelled the blow of the guest player Mohammed El-Baghdadi from the penalty spot, after which he became ill. Arne fell, shaking. The football player was given first aid, emergency services soon arrived, including using a defibrillator, but they failed to save the goalkeeper – he died on the way to the hospital.

“It’s a shock and a tragedy for us. Arne played for the club all his life, he was very much loved. He was a friendly guy who was always ready to help. This is a heavy blow for his family and all of us,” said the sporting director of Winkel Sport. Patrick Rothsart.
