BRUSSELS. Belgian footballer Eden Hazard ended his career at the age of 32. He announced this on Tuesday through the social network.
The member of the bronze team from the 2018 World Cup worked in Real Madrid until the end of last season and did not find a new club.
“You have to listen to yourself and say stop at the right time. After 16 years and more than 700 games played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer,” Hazard wrote in a post on Instagram.
Hazard, who played as an offensive midfielder and winger, played for Lille (2007–2012), Chelsea (2012–2019) and Real Madrid (2019–2023).
His last stop was especially disappointing. In Real, he was often troubled by injuries. He played 126 matches for Belgium and scored 33 goals in them.
“I managed to fulfill my dream, I played and had fun on pitches all over the world. I was lucky to meet great coaches and teammates.
Special thanks to my family, friends, advisors and people who have been there for me through good times and bad. And finally, a huge thank you to you, the fans who followed me,” said the Belgian, who first rose to prominence in the 2011/12 season when he scored 20 league goals for Lille.
After the breakthrough year, Chelsea of London paid 35 million euros for him, making him the second most expensive player in the club’s history at the time, after the Spaniard Fernando Torres (50 million from FC Liverpool).
During his seven-year tenure with “The Blues”, he won two titles, two trophies in the European League, and also won the FA Cup and the League Cup. In the Premier League, he started 245 matches, in which he scored 85 goals and added 61 assists.
After the transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu for 115 million, he was troubled by frequent injuries, due to which he played only 54 matches in La Liga and scored four goals.
With the “white ballet” he enjoyed two league titles in four years, he was also at the fourteenth triumph of “Los Blancos” in the Champions League. In the past year, he won the trophy in the Spanish King’s Cup and the title at the Club World Cup with Real.
