“This report does not yet take into account the ambitions of this government, but it does underline how important those ambitions are”, responded Van der Straeten in “The morning” on Radio 1.
Van der Straeten will have to adjust the current plan, especially if Europe continues to increase its ambitions. That means a renegotiation with the regions. Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels provide the lion’s share of renewable energy and are also responsible for energy saving.
But Flanders was already obstructive in the previous plan. New investments in renewable energy or energy saving must above all be “feasible and affordable”, emphasizes the Flemish energy minister Zuhal Demir (N-VA). Flanders even lowered its growth path to 2030 for renewable energy. It will therefore not be easy negotiations for Van der Straeten.
