Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Calls for Sanctions on Israel Over Gaza Bombing

Petra De Sutter, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister, called on her country’s government to impose sanctions on Israel due to its continuous bombing of the Gaza Strip for more than a month.

She told a local newspaper on Wednesday, “It is time to impose sanctions on Israel. Throwing bombs like rain is beyond humanity, and it is clear that Israel does not care about international calls for a ceasefire.”

“We cannot turn a blind eye while children die every day in Gaza,” De Sutter added.

She also stressed the need to investigate Israel’s bombing of hospitals and refugee camps in Gaza, and said that this “constitutes a war crime and is completely unacceptable.”

The Belgian official stated that the European Union should immediately suspend the association agreement with Israel, which aims to improve economic and political cooperation between the two parties.

She added that a ban must be imposed on the import of products from the occupied Palestinian territories, and violent settlers, as well as politicians and soldiers responsible for war crimes, must be prevented from entering the European Union.

At the same time, she said that Belgium should increase funding for the International Criminal Court in The Hague to investigate the bombings, while cutting off the flow of money to Hamas.

Over the past few days, international calls have escalated to punish Israel for its ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip, which has resulted, to date, in the deaths of 10,600 people, most of them women and children, in addition to thousands of wounded, and the destruction of entire neighborhoods on top of their residents.
