The Belgian Supreme Court of Justice says that the Public Prosecution Service has made no attempts to withhold information about the death of Slovakian Jozef Chovanec in a police cell in 2018.
In the case, “the truth is sought in all openness and with the active participation of all litigants,” the authority said.
The council was created in 1999 in the aftermath of the Dutroux affair to restore public confidence in the justice system. It was the first time that the Board investigated a criminal investigation that has not yet been completed.
Charleroi airport
Chovanec was arrested at Charleroi airport while boarding in February 2018 because he did not want to show his ticket and made a confused impression. He was locked up in a cell.
There he hit a door with his head bleeding. Aviation police officers tried to calm him down violently, including by pressing a cloth over his head. Chovanec went into cardiac arrest. He was taken to hospital, but never woke up from a coma.
