The Belgian Competition Authority (BMA) is considering whether an investigation should be initiated into the market practices of the online store Bol.com. This can be heard in the office of Minister of Economy Pierre-Yves Dermagne (PS).
The Dutch competition watchdog ACM has started an investigation into Bol.com due to signals that the company favors itself and certain entrepreneurs on the platform, at the expense of other sellers.
The Belgian Competition Authority is in close contact with the Dutch regulator, the office of Minister of Economy Pierre-Yves Dermagne heard on Thursday evening. “The issues raised are being followed with particular attention by the BMA, and the authority will independently decide whether there are sufficient grounds to initiate an investigation,” it said.
N-VA MP Michael Freilich called on Dermagne earlier in the day to launch an investigation. “This is the only way our market will remain fair and inclusive for all those who want to sell,” he says.
Self-employed organizations Unizo and NSZ support that call. “We have been advocating for some time to further address the dominant position of large online trading platforms compared to small retailers,” says Unizo CEO Danny Van Assche. He asks that the other major internet platforms also be investigated.
