Belgian brilliance: Heymans and Kimeli go to the last place of 5,000 m, Crestan dominates 800 m – sporza.be

A morning session with Belgian glamor in Paris. There are two teammates in the final of the 5,000 meters. Both John Heymans and Isaac Kimeli surprised with a strong 3rd place in their series. Eliott Crestan continued that trend and dominated in his 800 meters. There was no bad news for the high jumper Thomas Carmoy and the other Belgians.

“This is really crazy!”

The joy on their faces John Heymans in Isaac Kimeli talking books. In the 5,000 meters, the Belgians pulled off a narrow stop by placing 3rd in their finals.

Heymans did this thanks to a “perfectly executed race plan” in 14’08″33, Kimeli showed himself as fresh as a violin with a time of 13’52″18.

Follow that good example Elliott Crestan in the 800m.

The best Belgian runner started on that track from row 1 in heat 1. A number that Crestan would not let go.

Our partner was in the lead from start to finish. He was constantly looking over his shoulder and getting the upper hand. He crossed the finish line in control in 1’45″51, the 8th fastest time of all participants. That’s good for his semi-final.

Tibo De Smet in Pieter Sisk also trying to get in front of the heat, but fell shortly after 800 meters. Sisk is particularly disappointed, “because it only made a difference of 4 tenths and I was cut off.” The two Belgians must go to the rematches.

I tried to get through the whole run Thomas Carmoy to qualify for the Olympic final in the high jump.

Carmoy opened flat at 2.15 metres. 5 centimeters higher he needed two attempts. Finally, his adventure ended at 2.24 meters, because he broke his ankle on his first attempt. For example, it is not in the final, unlike the Olympics Tamberi and Barsham.

Although the latter still made some effort. Tamberi struggled with kidney stones just before the Games and was clearly still not feeling very fit. His Qatari colleague suddenly surprised him with a calf bump. Fortunately without adverse effects.

Elise Vanderelst he was allowed to complete the morning session for Team Belgium in the 1,500 meter repeat.

A place in the top 3 was the goal, but it soon became clear that it was too ambitious. Vanderelst dropped back to 7th place after two fast final laps and is eliminated.

END OF THE MORNING SESSION

Good performances from Belgium to look back on in the morning session. Our comrades showed very good results, especially in the 5,000 meters and 800 meters.

Vanderelst is fired

Vanderelst dismissed

Elise Vanderelst could not keep up with the high speed in the last laps. She placed 7th in her repeat in 4’08″86 and was eliminated.

Vanderelst chooses a place after British Walker-Nolan. She hopes to be able to control the race from the second row.

Elise Vanderelst her last chance for the semi-finals

Elise Vanderelst is the last Belgian to take part in this morning’s session. She must finish among the top 3 in her heat of the 1,500 meters to advance to the semifinals. So the motto is to make good weather at the front.

Watch Pieter Sisk’s answer:

Sisk is also looking for a second chance

Also love reposts

He hesitated for a moment and looked for a hole, but found none. Sisk started his 800 meters well. Pushing and pulling? He could not agree with that. The first person comes 6th in his row in 1’46” 60. This includes a ticket for the replays.

Finally, Pieter Sisk at 800 meters

Pieter Sisk’s Olympic debut. Belgium is last in the 800 meters running in row 4, row 3.

See Tibo De Smet’s answer:

De Smet to a second chance

De Smet to a second chance

The last half lap was too much. Tibo De Smet struggled to place in the top 3 in his series. But in the last bend and in the straight he had no more left. The result: 7th in 1’46″33 and a retake.

Tibo De Smet will appear

The second (of three) Belgians in the 800 meters. Tibo De Smet goes in row 4 to get a place in the semi-finals.

Check out Eliott Crestan’s answer:

Crestan won his heat of the 800 meters

Authoritative Christian!

Eliott Crestan wins his heat of the 800 meters. The Belgian crossed the line first in 1’45” 51. He dominated his race from start to finish. He can go to the post- final round.

Eliott Crestan’s conversion

In heat 1 of the 800 meters it is up to Eliott Crestan to prove himself. He is running in series 1. Can he continue his good form – this year he ran a personal record?

Check out Isaac Kimeli’s answer:

Kimeli also to the final!

Kimeli also impresses!

All the time around place 9, but with a scorching final sprint Isaac Kimeli rolled up his opponents. He looks over his shoulder and feels: I’m in the final. Our teammate finished 3rd in his series, just like Heymans. There are two Belgians in the final!

With two laps to go, Kimeli moves to the front. It goes faster and faster. Can Belgium continue their flirtation with the top 8?

Cramps at Barshim

Watch the interview with John Heymans:

Is Isaac following Kimeli?

It is up to Isaac Kimeli to follow his partner’s good example. Can we dream of 2 Belgians in the final of the 5,000 meters?

Carmoy also fails on his third attempt over 2.24 metres

Heymans can go to the final on Saturday!

Heymans fist in the air!

He looks back several times and can hardly believe it. The Belgian crosses the line in third place after a tumultuous finish to the 5,000 metres, including falls in the final lap. He stayed ahead of John Heymans thanks to excellent positioning. He can go to the final on Saturday!

Lots of pulling and pushing. It is an anxious race in the 5,000 meters, as qualification is still possible for everyone.

Carmoy also misses the bar on his second attempt at 2.24 metres

Even with his second attempt at 2.24 metres, Thomas Carmoy fails to hit the bar. There is still another opportunity at that height.

With 4 laps to go, John Heymans comes to the front. The Belgian spent most of his time in the belly of the pack during the race. Now he hopes to hold off the rising guns.

To John Heymans in the 5,000 meters

John Heymans flexes his muscles. The Belgian is looking forward to his 5,000 meters streak. The target? Be in the top 8 to get to the finals.

Carmoy failed at 2.24 metres

Carmoy also failed on his first attempt at 2.24 metres. Second time success?

On the second try, award to Carmoy

Belgium won the prize at the second attempt. Carmoy follows the example of fellow Olympic champion Barshim and completes the 2.20 meter mark.

Carmoy fails to clear 2.20 meters on his first attempt

Less successful for Carmoy at 2.20 metres. He did not hit the bar on his first attempt. The fiery Italian Tamberi thrives on that.

Carmoy opens with a flawless jump of 2.15 metres

Tómas Carmoy opens his competition with a clear jump of 2.15 metres.

There are some question marks about Olympic champion Tamberi. His preparation was not injury free and he had to deal with kidney stones just before the Games.

David Naert

A high jump competition will start soon. The bar for the athletes to qualify for the final is set at 2.29 metres. That is Carmoy’s personal record, so the Belgian must surpass himself or enter the top 12.

Live stream at 10am

Fear not, athletics fan. You won’t miss any of the Belgian action on the slopes this morning either. From 10am there will be images and sounds – with the voices of David Naert and Eline Berings – from Paris.

Wash away your bad day?

The Belgians hope to wash away yesterday’s bad day with new sparks. Thomas Carmoy hoping to provide the first in the high jump series. After that, we have to look forward to companions in the 5,000 meters and the 800 meters, among others Elliott Crestan. Elise Vanderelst finishes the morning session with a retake on the 1,500 meters.

In the heat of the 400 meters, many experts already saw that things were not looking good for Doom.

Pieter – Jan Hannes

There was no Olympic final in the 400 meters for Alexander Doom. Unfortunately the European champion dropped out injured in the semi-final. There will also be no Belgian in the final in the 400 meter hurdles. Naomi Van den Broeck, Hanne Claes and Paulien Couckuyt died in the semi-final. Relive the evening session of the Belgians.
