The Belgian federal prosecutor says that the suspects did not yet have a concrete target. They would have already discussed different scenarios. It is unclear whether they had weapons.
Most of the suspects are Chechen. It would concern supporters of the terrorist group IS who have quickly radicalized.
The Belgian authorities decided on Thursday to search houses in Roeselare, Menen, Ostend, Wevelgem and Ghent. It is not known whether they found anything in the process.
It is already the third time in a short time that people have been arrested in Belgium on suspicion of plotting an attack. At the end of March, eight more people were arrested for that reason.
The federal prosecutor calls that worrying. “We see that radicalization is taking place very quickly in certain environments,” the public prosecutor’s office says VRT NWS.
The threat level for Belgium remains at the same level, government agency OCAD reports. Belgium has four threat levels, of which the second lowest is currently in force. “This means the threat is considered medium.”
