Belgian (21) dies after falling out of a window at a police lockdown party

The man fell out of the window of the hotel room at 4 a.m. last night after the police had come across several reports of noise nuisance, the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office reports.

The room was on the top floor of the hotel. The hotel staff had already spoken to the hotel guests about their behavior several times.

Heavily affected

When the police arrived, the eight partygoers tried to hide. One of them climbed out the window. Police present tried to resuscitate the victim until the ambulance arrived, but the attempt to no avail.

The other hotel guests, the hotel staff and the police officers involved have been severely beaten and received by victim support.

Terrible

“I am shocked by the death of a young Antwerp resident last night”, Mayor Bart De Wever said in a response. “I want to express my condolences to his family and loved ones. The judicial investigation into this terrible event is ongoing.”

De Wever has noticed that people have been trying to escape the police since the start of the controls at lockdown parties. “However, the security forces are in our public interest and are there to help us where necessary,” he says.

The death of the man “confronts us painfully with the consequences of long lockdown periods on the mental well-being, especially of young people,” said the mayor. “I hope that we will conduct the social debate about this in all serenity.”
