Belarusians who unload smuggled cigarettes from an excavator are detained in Lithuania

The two men were detained on Thursday night when an excavator loaded a box of cigarettes covered with black polyethylene film from a train standing on a remote branch of the station. A train of rubble was carried on the train.

The detainees did not have an identity document, but border guards soon found out that they were Belarusian citizens holding Schengen visas.

In the wagon and next to it, the border guards found a total of 160 boxes of cigarettes “Minsk Capital QS”, “NZ Gold” and “Minsk 5 Superslims”, which contained 79,955 packs of cigarettes.

The court remanded the detainees in custody for two months as a precautionary measure. They face fines or up to eight years’ imprisonment.
