Belarusian Prosecutor General’s Office suspects former Lithuanian President Adamkus of shooting thousands of Belarusians

According to the statement of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus, Adamkus had gone from Lithuania to Belarus to shoot the locals when he was still a minor – 15-17 years old.

Valdis Adamkus in a campaign of solidarity with the Belarusian people and at the request of the Minsk regime prosecutor’s office:

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus is investigating the involvement of the former Lithuanian president in battalion operations that carried out punitive operations on Belarusian territory in 1944 and therefore asked the Lithuanian side to question Adamkus as a witness in the criminal case of “Belarusian genocide”, Minsk-controlled television reports.

Belarus has information that Adamkus was a trustee of the so-called “Minsk butcher”, his assistant. Antans Impulevičs, whose orderly battalion led by the Nazis during the Nazis, has conducted extensive punitive operations in Belarus, is called the “Minsk Butcher”. Eduard Skurat, a senior prosecutor at the General Prosecutor’s Office in Belarus, said investigators were currently investigating whether Adamkus was involved in any way in the battalion. Meanwhile, Belarusian television almost claims that this is an irrefutable fact:

According to Skurat, after the liberation of Belarus and Lithuania from Nazi invaders, some forces of Lithuanian voluntary punishment units, including Minsk butcher Antans Impulevičs and Voldemārs Adamkavičs, fled to Germany, and then to Great Britain and the United States to avoid responsibility for crimes committed.

Voldemārs Adamkavičs is the same Valdis Adamkus – he changed his name and surname already in the USA in 1955 so that he would not be found by Nazi hunters. During the war, Impulevičs and Adamkus were part of the so-called Homeland Defense Army, which fought as part of the Wehrmacht (in the history of Latvia, an analogous formation to the Lithuanian Homeland Defense Army was a legion – ed.) ”.

According to Skurat, Antanas Impulevičs’ punishment battalion, which also included Adamkus, had killed thousands of Belarusians, especially around the Latvian border, because the Nazis had aimed to turn a 40-kilometer-wide strip along the Latvian border into a “dead land”. It must be said that Lithuania does not dispute that Impulevich, who died more than half a century ago in the United States, is a bloody war criminal whose unit killed thousands of people in Belarus, mostly Jews and Soviet prisoners of war, but there is no reason to believe that Adamkus also took part in the massacre. It must be said that both Impulevich and Adamkus emigrated to the United States after the war, where none of them was tried for war crimes. Impulevič, who died more than half a century ago, was sentenced to death in absentia by a court of the Lithuanian SSR in the first half of the 1960s, but he was not extradited to the USSR.

Adamkus was indeed in the Homeland Defense Army, whose second battalion was commanded by Impulevičs. The next president of Lithuania in this army was an interpreter, moreover in 1944, not in 1941, when the Impulevich Shucman Battalion mostly carried out the shooting of Belarusian civilians. At that time, Adamkum was not more than 15 years old, and no matter how cruel the Nazi regime was, he did not call such young boys to punish at the beginning of the war.

Adamkus himself called this request from the Belarusian law enforcement authorities a “stupid attempt to divert attention from the Belarusian freedom struggles”: “In my opinion, this does not in any way indicate a desire to find out anything – it is simply a formal provocation,” he told BNS.

Laurīns Jonavičs, a lecturer at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University, has also called it a blatant provocation: “It is a kind of ‘playing on the nerves’, trying to derail us”.

The Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office has assured the agency that on May 10 it received a request for legal assistance from Belarus as a witness in the criminal case of genocide against the people of Belarus to question Adamka as a witness. Elena Martinoniene, the press secretary of the Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office, said that the Belarusians would receive an answer “in accordance with the law”. Martinoniene emphasized that a “request for general legal assistance” had been received from Belarus, which did not contain any detailed requirements or specific data.
