During the Eurasian Economic Union summit in Moscow last week, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is said to have praised the union countries that choose to support Russia.
The Eurasian Economic Union consists of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.
In a video from the summit, published on Telegram on Sunday, the president promises that the countries that support Russia will get nuclear weapons, writes Svenske The evening paper.
– There will be nuclear weapons for everyone, Lukashenko is said to have stated, according to Ukrainian Pravda and Kyiv Independent who has reproduced the interview.
– More dangerous now than during the world wars
– Irresponsible behavior
This weekend it became known that Russia’s Putin will station nuclear weapons in Belarus.
A decision the West – and not least the USA – reacted strongly to.
– These plans are the latest example of irresponsible behavior on the Russian side since the invasion, spokesman for the US State Department, Matthew Miller, is said to have stated, according to Reuters.
Putin’s justification is said to be Britain’s decision to send armor-piercing munitions to Ukraine, which contain depleted uranium.
Since March, Russia has announced that it may be appropriate to move nuclear weapons to Belarus, but only last week was the agreement signed.
– This is pulling the screw quite a bit more. Compared to the British decision, Putin is escalating unnecessarily, said Tom Røseth, principal lecturer in intelligence and head of the Ukraine program at the Norwegian Defense Academy (FHS), back in March.
Røseth, on the other hand, emphasized that even if Russia would be able to place nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil – it would still be under strict control from Russia and Belarus would not have authority over anything.
More attacks in Russia: – The West worried
– Calm down
Lately there have also been rumors about Lukashenko’s health after several hospital stays.
After being observed during the victory parade in Moscow on 9 May, fuel was added to the fire when several people thought he seemed distracted and unsteady to the bone.
– If anyone thinks I’m going to die, calm down. Calm down. This is nothing more than idle reasoning in social media, he said on Tuesday last week in response to the rumours.
Furthermore, he claimed that he suffers from adenovirus, which according to Store norske lexikon causes symptoms such as fever, sore throat and other cold symptoms.
