Belarusian opposition leader launches hunger strike / Article / LSM.lv

Maxim Znak, one of the arrested Belarusian opposition leaders, has gone on hunger strike in prison.

Znaks is one of the leaders of the Opposition Coordinating Council. The man is accused of trying to endanger national security. Znak’s lawyer told the Belarusian media that the hunger strike was intended to draw attention to the fact that he was being held in prison only for expressing his views.

CONTEXT:

Belarus must ensure free access to prisons for UN Special Envoy Anaisa Marina, including prisons. This is urged in the resolution by the UN Human Rights Council.

Demanding access to a UN observer in Belarus, the Human Rights Council also met in Minsk on Friday to end the use of violence, torture and detention against civil rights. The Belarussian authorities must enter into a dialogue with the opposition and civil society, the resolution said.

“We have witnessed thousands of arrests, hundreds of reports of torture and ill-treatment. Including sexual abuse and torture of children, violent abduction in broad daylight, presumably because of their peaceful expression. Armed police and security personnel have been systematically used to use undue or excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. “
