Speculation about the health of the 68-year-old Lukashenko spread after May 9, when he appeared unwell at a military parade in Moscow and did not attend a lunch with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
After that, the gentleman did not attend the celebration of the National Flag, Coat of Arms and Anthem Day, where he delivered a speech in other years. The dictator was not shown until May 15, when he sounded unusually hoarse in a video that circulated.
Andrii Yusipov, a representative of the Ukrainian military intelligence service, commented on May 18 that Lukashenko is indeed ill, but not in such a way that he will fall out of circulation for a long time.
On Tuesday, May 23, Lukashenko himself commented on the recent disappearance.
“If someone thinks that I was going to die, calm down. Calm down. This is nothing more than empty chatter in chats and Telegram channels,” “Meduza” quotes Lukashenko.
He explained that he had contracted an adenovirus infection, which is usually “healed in three days”, but due to a tight schedule, he did not get to do it: “Then to Moscow, then Leningrad [Sanktpēterburgas PSRS laika nosaukums]then to taluk, then to Grodņi, you dragged me to the square to hug with those girls, then to Gomeļi at [reģiona vadītāja Ivana] Krupko – it all came together.”
The dictator insisted that he was “not going” to die: “You will suffer with me for a long time.”
Lukashenko has been in power in Belarus since 1994, when he first won the presidential election. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which includes the use of Belarus’ territory and infrastructure, the question of how independent Lukashenko and Belarus are from Moscow has been pressing.
